I’m part of three big fandoms, Disney, obviously, Doctor who and Supermarionation. The latter includes programs such as Captain Scarlet and Thunderbirds (All Americans Google it) anyway. In these fandoms creative people take inspiration from them and let their passion grow. In the Doctor Who community many people want to write for the doctor, other Draw parts of it whilst a lot of people create animations, short Films, audios and short documentaries based on it. Without this program a lot of the people in the British movie and Television industry in the UK probably wouldn’t be there. My inspiration to write comes from Thunderbirds, for years as a kid I wanted to make my own episode, I wanted to act in it at the time but it evolved into writing. My first script was based on one of the series. I was lucky enough to write for two of these fandoms in small ways, twice on an official website and once , a short story for a spin off range and I hope that I can update this essay as time goes on to say I have done more. I have also written for Fan series based on Doctor who,
This is all fine and dandy but where does Disney come into it. Sure it’s lovely to hear about what I have done and what I like but let’s be honest you have all come here for Disney.
I met two really creative people when I worked at The Disney Store and they have become my closest friends. Although I met the second person I am going to talk about first, I became close friends with the other person first. I’m not going to mention their names, not for security or anything but by adding a name I think it takes any chance of relation to you guys. Maybe you have friends who do the same or similar things.
So the first friend, she inspires me every time we talk. She works as a photographer and it’s what she wants to do, how much fun is that, actually doing something you want to do as opposed to something you have to do. We have done many photos together and she even helped me in making the cover for my first book. We met at the Disney store but actually her love for the franchise is diluted with other things, My Little Pony comes to mind.
She does however adore the Lion King and every time I see anything Lion King then I make a mental note for Birthdays and Christmases. She also collects some really cool stuff and her house is like one Giant Museum to retro and cool things. She also got me into Disney pins. Quite accidently it turns out, I had always seen them and bought a few at my time with Disney but they were more just because they were cheap and one day I was going to Paris and I could trade. Well it took nearly 5 years but I did get to Disneyland Paris, and I asked my friend if she wanted anything, to which she said she wanted a pin. Big Hero 6 had just come out at the time and she loved Baymaxx so this was the one I got her. Whilst looking for this I ransacked every shop and fell in love, I only bought one pin, Scrooge McDuck, but I knew that when we visited the other parks I would get another one from each park. Well I went to Florida and came back with loads.
As I say every time I meet up with this friend I am inspired to reach my dreams, true she wants to work for herself one day and I really hope she makes that dream but for now the fact she does what she loves is a dream I would like fulfilled and she is proof it can come true.
My second friend I first met when I handed in my CV to The Disney Store, she was quite abrupt as she was merchandising/ rearranging shelves. She was also the one in charge on my first day, had no idea who I was and shoved me in the stock room to tidy up. But I will go into more detail about my time at Disney in another post, which includes both friends and more.
This friend produces some marvellous pieces of art, and although this is a hobby she has only recently picked up I hope that she does really well, I also hope that I get one someday. She inspires me to create time for your passion. She started a blog that I know has some fascinating facts because her knowledge is second to none. We often have a geek fest and I enjoy seeing what she talks about next.
The other part about both friends is they have inspired me when it comes to certain elements of my home. The photographer with her giant museum of retro and cool things has always something I have been envious of; because of this I and my partner have now built up the collection for a merchandise room.
My other friend has had for years a beautiful Disney Tree and whereas I never hope to beat it or come close, her eye for Style is miles ahead of mine, I have adopted the notion as part of my Christmas celebrations and whereas it is a centre piece now, as time goes on and my Christmas decorations grow it will just be another fun element of my winter wonderland.
My friends inspire me and I hope in some way I inspire them; they are always there when I need them and enjoy seeing them. Across the years I have had other friends and I’m sure I will talk about them in other blogs.
