The Brain of Morbius

Writer's picture: Steven WaltonSteven Walton

Doctor Who in the mid 1970s took many of its notes from the horror films and books of the past. Most of the stories from Tom Baker's second and third season have elements of these but The Brian of Morbius is almost a tick box list.

A scary masion, lightning, a witch-like cult, a Frankenstienesque monster and a mad scientist; the list goes on. The story is definately a prime example of the show at the time and how the format of the show should be used. As with the audiences of the show in the past it was always created as a family show, but this is the first true attempt at being just as intriguing for adults as it was for the younger veiwers.

There's a few different villians in the peice, although many of them redeem themselves throughout the course of the story. Though the bad guy in the title is Morbius the actual villian could be seen as Solon from the start.

The sisterhood of Kharn are one of the most rounded and complete civilisasion of the shows history and even they come off as the bad guys at the start of the story.

The story is about a scientist that tries to assemble a body for the brain of a once evil Timelord. caled Morbius. He enlists the help of an ogre-like creature called Condor. The Doctor's TARDIS is dragged to the planet and the scientist realises that the Doctor's head is perfect for his plan.

The DVD comes fully restored with, along with the usual extras, has a detailed making of with the cast and crew.

A great story that depics the fourth Doctor's era is too charming and scary to be just a simple paint by numbers serial.
