Hidden Mickey

Writer's picture: Steven WaltonSteven Walton

An old post about my Hidden Mickeys, since writing this I can honestly say my collection has doubled but I will leave this here for now and one day share an update.

A charming feature of Disney is the concept of Hidden Mickeys. For anyone not familiar with the idea it's basically an easter egg, in the DVD sense, but its the outlined shape of Mickeys head hidden in the pattern of something else.

My first encounter happened when I worked at The Disney Store a few years ago. I was told about the pin badges having a small mickey shaped blotch somewhere in the picture. I think my friend owns a few of these with the Hidden Mickey on but mine is Winnie the Pooh's friends all bunched together with that all important mark hidden, quite visably, in Eeyore's eye.

The concept has a small place in my heart as I love the idea and love looking out for them. This little quirk has now flipped over as my home ihas become the canvas for my own Hidden Mickey.

As an extention to Mickey's head, some other Disney characters find their way into other films. Using this as an idea also, my Disney Easter egg has also extended.

So let the hunt begin!

The Bedroom

So this is quite a small one to begin with. Infact you may even qualify for this one in your home too.

Everyone has a teddy somewhere, mine just happens to be a large Donald Duck... and a medium sized Goofy. My partner has also been roped in with his very own Stitch. For valentines day we exchanged gifts and from his Disney giftbox out popped a Stich cushion.

The Bathroom

Another small one to get out of the way, our Bathroom has one Disney related article in it, our towels. Ranging from Mickey himself through to Jack Skeleton and 101 Dalmations.

Ok, so far I have just listed off my Disney homeware, surely the rest of this blog isnt going to be a gloryfied list of possesions. Well in the bathroom we have a candle holder, with a beautifle mixed pattern around the edge. But what shape does this pattern have? I'll give you a clude... they are formed of three circles.

The kitchen

Along side our Mickey ea towels and fridge magnets, the kitchen has my favourite Hidden Mickey. One of the reasons behind this is it is a true hidden Mickey. Our cutlery is made of a heavy stainless steal and cut out at the end of every peice is a small hole shaped in a very recognisable shape.

The Livingroom

Most of my Disney items are in the living room. Including all of my Blurays and DVDs but looking around two peices stand out. Well they stand out to me, for everyone else they may not even be Disney.

We have a black picture frame in the shape of the world's most famous mouse.

The second is another Hidden Mickey in the truest form.

Our fruit bowl is made up of many circles of different shapes. But look closely and every circle makes up two ears and a face.

Outside

Everyone likes gnomes right? No? How about three all shapes in either Mickey, Minnie and Goofy?

Me

Apart from the odd item of clothing with characters on like my Muppets socks or Black Cauldron Tee I have three items worth noting. First of all my backpack has a black and red pattern printed all over. And guess what? Yup all in the shape of Mickey. However instead of just his head this pattern is of his full body all in a sketch style.

My partner brought me a flask from New York. On the side has a I❤ NY, but instead of the heart the red shape is once again a Mickey head.

The third item isnt actually mine, my partner has a blue tee with a swirly pattern made out of all dots. Unless you look really close you wouldnt even know that those swirls are actually Mickey shaped.

Other

Christmas is a time for magic and in our house we have a little Disney magic involved too. Our tree orniments are from the Disney Store all shapes as different characters. Looking around our tree you can see Tinkerbell from one angle, Chip n Dale from another. You may even see Robin Hood or Basil the Great Mouse Detective, but one thing is for sure you will definately see some one very familiar dressed as Santa. Now the really Hidden Mickey of christmas is a bowl full of new editions. In our Mickey fruit bowl we often fill this with left over baubles, but this year instead of the usual round shapes these are a very special shape instead...

So when you next go to a Disney Park you may notice all of these heads in the decor, I like to think I have created my own little peice of magic. I like showing them off and everyone always gets excited when they realise that they have just used Disney handwash before drying their hands on a Pocahontas towel. Or that the spoon they have just stirred their tea with has Mickey at the end, or when they stand on the balcony in the sunshine and notice a bronze statue our favourite mouse..

Snow White was a huge success. The first of its kind, a full length, fully animated film. Movie goers lapped it up and it has remained...
